Whether we want to admit it, or not, the money we have (or don’t have), has the tendency to run our lives. It controls where we live; the job we have; the friends we choose; and may even control whether or not we feel happy and content. The size of your paycheck shouldn’t have that much control over you — get your finances in order, and take back your life!
Overcome destructive money habits:
When it comes to money, no one is perfect. We all spend on things we shouldn’t from time to time. But when we hit a point where we’re going into debt for all the “fun stuff” we want, then it’s time to face facts: no one can continuously spend more than they make without dire consequences in the future. Take the first step: set up a budget. Then make a firm commitment to stick to it. Spending plans are a wonderful tool that easily shows you where your money is going, in order to better equip you with the know-how to spend more wisely on the things that are both enjoyable, and within your financial means.
Deal with your envy and greed:
So what if your car is ten years old? Do you like it? Be honest now. Chances are it feels much like an old pair of sneakers – comfortable. Don’t go trading in that old reliable friend just because your neighbor got a spiffy new car and a nice big loan payment! Every time you want to buy something ask yourself: am I buying this because someone I know has it? Sure, it feels good to have nice things. But when keeping up with everyone around you is sinking you deeper and deeper into debt, it’s time to reevaluate your reasons for feeling like you have to keep up wit everyone else’s lousy spending habits.
Resist the strong pull of today’s culture of possession as an obsession:
It sure isn’t easy to say no to that fancy vacation or new furniture when we’re bombarded with messages that say we have to have it to be happy, or we work hard and deserve it. But, let’s be practical here, what’s more important, having that new deck put onto your house, or the peace of mind of knowing that the money for this month’s mortgage payment is sitting in the bank, just waiting for you to write the check? Don’t let today’s advertisers and marketing pros suck you into a world of debt and destruction. Learn to say no to what you don’t want or need, and say yes to the things are truly important and will make your family happier.
Finding a balance between what we want and what we can afford can be tricky; don’t risk your future over “things.” Learn to curb your spending, for a more enjoyable, and stress free life.

Budgeting isn’t rocket science. But, it does take some preparation, consideration and a healthy dose of reality, combined with a willingness to change some unhealthy spending habits.
There are no hard and fast rules when creating a budget that works for your family. Every family is different; and so is every budget. The key is to create a spending plan that fits your income, and that everyone in your household can live with. Setting stringent spending limits that are impractical or unattainable isn’t going to help get you on the right financial track. Being realistic will. A firm commitment to spend less than you make, and save for the more important things in your life is even better. Take the time to begin the budget process right: with good planning. Here’s how:
1: Keep A List of Every Household Expense for One Month.
Everyone usually has a clear idea of the big bills: mortgage, car loans, and groceries. It’s the little stuff that can kill a budget. Before writing out your first set of budget numbers, it’s first important to know exactly where your money has been going. For one month, record every household expense – no matter how small. You may be surprised at how much those little conveniences and splurges really add up to.
2: Make A Complete List of Spending Areas.
Once you see what you’ve been spending your money on, on a regular basis, it’s time to make a thorough list of household and personal expense categories. Most people find their spending areas include such things as: mortgage/rent; car loans; insurance premiums; utilities; groceries; entertainment; school lunches; clothes; business expenses, etc. Include everything! Those school lunches, manicures and even that morning coffee all add up by the end of the month. Don’t forget less regular bills such as annual car insurance premiums, birthday gifts/parties, summer vacations, holiday outings, field trips, membership dues, magazine subscriptions, and more.
3: Compare Your Expenses To Your Income.
Now comes the hard part: add up all of your expenses and compare it to your NET income (this is your take-home pay after taxes, insurances, 401K contributions, etc.). Many people make the mistake of thinking that if they make $75,000 a year, they can spend $75,000. Wrong! You usually only receive about $55,000 to $60,000 after normal payroll deductions. If you’re like most Americans, your expenses may be much higher than your income. Now what? It’s time to start getting serious.
4: Be Realistic.
Let’s get real here: no one can continually spend more money than they make without serious repercussions. Eventually you won’t be able to juggle the payments anymore, and something won’t get paid. You’re walking a slippery slope headed toward financial ruin, and it’s time to be realistic. Now that you’ve had a chance to clearly see where your money is going ever month, it’s time to start chipping away at all the waste.
Start big or start small: the decision is yours. The goal is to slash as much frivolous waste as possible from your current spending plan. That may mean taking your lunch to work twice a week, and coloring your own hair, or it may mean selling your second car and taking the train to work. The severity of the things you’re forced to give up depends on how much overspending leeway you’ve been allowing your family.
5: Together Come Up With A New Spending Plan.
Once you’ve cut out all of the things you know you can do without, it’s time to prioritize your spending list to see what else can go. List the most important life expenses first: your house or apartment; food; health insurance; car costs; school fees; etc. As you move further down the list, add entertainment; eating out; taking the kids to an amusement park; summer pool fees.
You know, all the things you think you need, but may be able to do without. Now, if you’re expenses remain higher than your income, its time to start condensing and cutting from the bottom of this list. Sure, having a pool in the backyard may be great, but if you both work, and the kids are at summer camp all day, is the cost of its upkeep really worth being in debt? Or, would that money be better spent in some other category? How about fast food? If your family is spending more than $100 a month eating out, it may be time to reevaluate why you’re not cooking a home.
Are your kids involved in too many extracurricular activities, not leaving you the time to cook and eat in? Or have you just allowed yourselves the luxury of easy dinners so long they now feel like a necessity? Now’s the time for you to discuss, as a family, what is really important. If eating out three times a week is more important than going to the movies on Saturdays, or going on that beach vacation, so be it. That’s your choice. Just remember, that every expense has an impact on your financial future.
Looking at your finances with open eyes and a new attitude won’t be easy. Changing your spending habits will be even harder. But, establishing a solid budget, and learning to live within your means may make the difference between a life filled with financial struggles and stress, and a worry-free existence that allows you to spend money on the important things with little or no angst at all.

There are a number of different reasons as to why a person should learn about personal finance, but it is perhaps understandable that most people can not see these reasons for themselves. Personal finance is a difficult topic to learn about and for that reason a person just naturally tends to shy away from it, making excuses in an attempt to avoid having to learn about it. Well, personal finance is extremely important and here are some reasons why.
Money Flow
If you understand personal finance, then you will understand your money flow a lot better. There are a number of people that muddle through life paying their bills and their mortgage payment with the money that they have and then spending the rest of it or maybe letting it sit in their bank account. These are people that have no idea how personal finance works, so even if they end up making the right decisions they are doing it through luck.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with this particular approach, don’t you think that you would feel much better if you knew exactly what was going on with your money flow? The old saying is that knowledge is power and if you know about your money flow, you arguably have the most important individual power that exists in the world today.
Uncertainty and Fear
Human beings as a species have an irrational fear of uncertainty. In this respect, we are no different from any of the other mammalian species walking the planet, because all of them have been conditioned through thousands of generations of being eaten and killed to be afraid of what they don’t know. Uncertainty and fear therefore go hand in hand and when they do this in relation to something as important to your basic survival as money, the paralyzing effect that fear can have on you is something that is not even pleasant to think about.
Compare this situation however to a situation where somebody knows about how their money flow works and understands their entire personal finance situation. This person is not a person that is likely to be afraid, since there is no uncertainty involved with their financial situation. It is a lot easier to be afraid when you have no idea where your money is coming from and where it is going.
Utilization
If you truly understand personal finance, then another thing that you definitely should understand is utilization. A person that does not understand or appreciate personal finance is a person that is unlikely to save a lot of money, instead spending whatever they happen to have left after monthly expenses on entertainment and impulse purchasing. While there is nothing wrong with being a consumer on this level, it is something that might hamper you later on in life when your income begins to dry up and you realize you have no prospects on the horizon.
If the person does not spend a lot and does not understand personal finance, the same thing could happen. While the money in your bank account is available to you instead of having been spent on something impulsive, it is still not being utilized to its fullest extent.
Only a person with an understanding of personal finance would know that money being saved should at the very minimum be placed in a high interest savings account and later on should also probably be invested in things that yield a much higher interest rate. This difference in understanding and ultimately in utilization comes specifically from an understanding in personal finance.

Everybody should handle his or her personal finance with planning, it will be very helpful from a single person to a family. Most people receive a payment weekly or bi-weekly from a job or business and then pay their bills every month. There are many types of expenses such as food, gas, cars, rental, mortgage payment, utilities, entertainment, medical, insurances, clothing, phone, internet, credit cards, and others. People will need to pay attention to the incomes and expenses to try to keep their total of the expenses below their incomes, or their income actually covering the expenses. You should review the personal finance at least once a month.
Beginning of every month, plan on how much to spend on items like entertainment, traveling, gas, phone, web, utilities, food and other expenses. It will be helpful to itemize and list it out on a piece of paper or using a spreadsheet with a computer spreadsheet software. It will be a financial budget for the month and a goal of spending. There are always unexpected expenses need to be accounted for, for example, a new battery is needed for your car or a gift or present for a friend wedding. Budgeting expenses will be very helpful with accounting software that can keep record of every expense and income daily. There are many accounting softwares to choose from an online or walk-in store, you will need to research on what size and abilities the software are before buying. There are usually many expense and income and other informative reports to print for all the financial details, every item will show on the report after you entered the expense items in the system. Reports with monthly income and expense totals and budgeting reports will be available for the budgeting.
There are always adjustments needed for the budgeted expenses, because of unexpected and other reasons. It will be particularly easy to adjust with a computer spreadsheet or accounting software. Revise the monthly budget if necessary will make it more accurate. Review the budget often and adjust it as needs arise, and it will also vary from month to month. Well kept personal financial records will help a personal finance in better shape and also help to keep the finance improve in the future.

Easy ways of Managing your Personal Finance.
First, you need to separate your income from your expenditure.
Income would include salary and any regular inflows from investments while expenditure covers all monthly expenses. Expenses can be categorized into –
Rent
Utilities (electricity, telephone, cable, internet etc.)
Insurance -home, car, health
Groceries
Loan Repayment
Transportation
Miscellaneous
Some of these expenses are fixed while the others are variable. Fixed expenses include rent, loans, insurance, etc. as they remain the same every month. Variable expenses are those that fluctuate each month – like the amount spent on groceries.
In order to account your fixed expenses better, it might be a good idea to pay for them using cheques, or through ECS (Electronic Clearing System), etc. When you use cash to pay for variable expenses, you get a strong idea of how much you have spent which can result in less buying and avoid unnecessary spending.
Indiscriminate use of bank or credit cards can result in people not knowing where all the money has gone. Getting a good handle on where the money goes is the key to making a budget work. While balancing your accounts, make sure you put away some money as savings and keep some for entertainment!
Don’t be disheartened if at the beginning your debit and credit columns don’t balance out. Most often you would realize that you are spending way more than you need to. Take heart and work at lowering your variable expenses or increasing your income.
A general guideline in the financial world is that household expenses should not total more than 35% of income. People should be able to set aside 10% for savings, and 5% for charity or donations. One rule of thumb is to have three to six months worth of fixed expenses set aside in case of emergency or unexpected circumstances.
A balanced budget allows for planning for more variable expenses, such as vacations, gifts or large furniture purchases. Several resources give additional information about retirement planning and planning for purchasing a home. Do a thorough study before making these important decisions.

In today’s world, money is an essential part of our life. In a way, we can say that money is the life blood that lets us live a comfortable life. True, money can’t buy us happiness, but it certainly gives us the assurance of a secured future and freedom to purchase things which make us and our loved ones happy.
But despite all this, most people are either too careless about managing their personal finances or just don’t know how to do it efficiently. As a result, most people start caring about their money only when they have left with very less of it. In the 21st century world, it has almost become a norm.
The so-called double income families love to a life of every luxury possible in the world and they don’t even think twice before digging into their savings or taking loans to get it. As a result, 8 out of 10 people have at least some loans on their head.
Until two years ago, the effects of bad personal finance management was only seen on a small level. But the current recession has turned the demon of badly managed personal finance into a national calamity. The failing banks, closing businesses and cost cuttings left a large number of people without a job.
But the unemployment was just a push to create a whole domino effect on the economy. Devoid of any personal savings and buried under loans, people started losing their homes, cars and even health insurance. So many people defaulted on their insurance payment that many insurance companies declared bankruptcy and many others were on the brink of going out of business.
We can blame so many factors for this – the government, the corporates and most of all the banks who gave easy loans to people who could never afford them. But the truth is that it’s the job of banks to encourage us to take loans. That’s how their business. It’s only up to us to make complete sense of the situation.
Your banker would love to get you the huge loan for your second luxury car or a holiday home because he will benefit from it. He will even convince you that you are making the wisest decision by making a bigger purchase than you could ever afford to.
But you must understand that managing personal finances is extremely important. Make sure that you don’t make any purchase that’s out of your reach. We are not suggesting that you don’t take loan, but take it only when and only as much as essential. Try to create a savings account and keep an equivalent of three months of expenses in it, at all times.
In the end, I would say that bad times come in everybody’s life. We all have to go through our shares of difficulties whether its unemployment, sickness, or injury. All we can do is to make sure that we are prepared for it (at least financially).
